Critical Review - Smash Up! Awesome Level 9000

Last year, Rodney Smith from Watch it Played and I got to Smash Up! at Gen Con!  We had an absolute blast playing Smash Up! at the AEG booth, and, in our circles the rest of the week and months after.  Smash Up! was a big success for AEG last year, both at the con and for the remainder of the year.

Todd Rowland, the Marketing Director at AEG and the "head chief of awesomeness for Smash Up!" told us then, "There's more where that came from!" and was he ever right!  Recently, AEG released Smash Up! Awesome Level 9000, the new 4 faction expansion to last year's hit (well, Crit technically according to us!)

With Steampunk, Plants, Bear Cavalry and Ghosts, there's more combos, more dastardly traps to lay and more devilish tactics to employ, both on it's own or with the original base set!  Come along with me (and Mrs. Tox) as we review, and play through, some AL9K!

I think it's important to note that as much as there are a lot of good combinations, there are no bad combinations either.

We always pick randomly in our group and it's always been pretty close.

Looking forward to trying Ghost/Zombies and Ghost/Aliens... or Dinosaur/Bear Cavalry :)

I agree, I don't see things as bad combinations, more things that appeal to players' specific play styles more than others.

    Great review, my friend!

Alas, I remain unconvinced this game is anything but a lukewarm "meh" after many a game play session with friends and family.

    Forever alone....

Sometimes I see games as "meh" the first few times I play them and than they get better or vice versa.

I currently still enjoy this game though. For now. :)

Enjoy your reviews. Keep em coming.

Thanks John. I will say this, Smash Up! can be one of those "not for everyone" games. That said, I think it offers quite a bit of fun, challenges (especially in learning all the combos) and laughter to keep it rolling for a while. Base set, or the expansion, or together! Thanks for watching and commenting!

I do feel like I had one bad combination when I played, but that's just because the 2 decks conflicted with what they were meant to do. I tried Ghosts and Wizards. Ghosts want you to have 2 or less cards mostly, while wizards tend to draw cards. Ended up not getting a lot of ghost effects because my hand kept increasing haha. Love the game though. Easy to pick up but enough strategy to make you think.

That makes sense. I have yet to play that combo, but sounds harsh. Thankfully, there's enough replay-ability that you can always play again with something else. I'm loving Steampunk Aliens right now. I call them Alienunks :)
