Critical Preview - Pixel Glory

At Gen Con 2013 I met a man named Frank Alberts, who introduced me to something called "An Auction Building Game".  I was immediately intrigued and curious as to what that mean.  I had an idea of course, but I'm here to tell you, this idea, although small, makes for one heck of a fun card game!

In Pixel Glory, you play the role of a fame-hungry wizard.  You, and your opponents, will be "training" in town, using an auction style mechanic to draft spell cards for your deck.  These spells will also provide you essence of a specific element, and ultimately, help you defeat the monsters terrorizing the town in the nearby dungeon.

Pixel Glory is a unique combination of mechanics and a lighthearted theme that come together to produce an engaging and fun experience around the table.  In addition, it's quick to teach, easy to learn, and always different each time you play. The 16 bit art? If you are a retro-lover like me, that's just an added bonus!

Critical Preview - Space Junk

"In the year 2047 thw world's atmosphere was filled with all manners of junk, and finally those in charge decided to do something about it.  Their solution was to begin production of Space Junk, a brand new reality TV show that followed a group of very carefully, random contestants as they cobbled together spaceships out of whatever junk they can find and did their best to clean up space."

It is with that auspicious beginning that Space Junk launches itself onto your table. Lamp Light Games' first endeavor on Kickstarter is a bit of racing, a bit of combat, a bit of custom ship building, and a lot of comedy as you'll be adding plungers, surf boards, dentures, and anything else floating in the atmosphere to help your ship make it "one more orbit" or attack for "one more hit"!

Is Space Junk as fun as it is funny?  Can the universe, or Earth at least, be cleaned up by you, or your opponents?  Strap onto your elephant rockets and let's find out!

Critical Plays - Hearthstone - Arena Rogue Run!

We are taking Valeera on an Arena Run! If you haven't see our draft, check this out, but if you have, or you are done checking it out, then let's get ready to rumble!

Hearthstone Arena is one of the more fun aspects of the game, where you pick a random hero from a choice of three, then draft a 30 card deck and duke it out with online opponents.  The longer you last, the better your loot!  Packs, gold, crafting dust and more await the victors!

Check back often, as over the next few days we'll be posting all our games from this Arena run until we collect 3 losses!  You'll be able to see our wins, our defeats, and our loot at the end!  And of course, leave your comments below, or on our YouTube channel (or both) and let us know your thoughts!

Critical Plays - Hearthstone Arena Drafting

One of my favorite things about CCG/TCG type games is drafting.  I always felt it level set the playing field, allowing you to compete against other players where you weren't in a "pay to win" situation.

In Hearhtstone, drafting is a bit different than what a seasoned CCG/TCG player may think about, but it's fundamentally sound and a lot of fun!  You are presented with three random heroes to choose from and then each "turn" you must selet from 3 available card.

A nice thing about the digital piece of this game is that it can only offer you cards you use, so there's no fear of choosing a Paladin class and only seeing Shaman cards!  We all know the pain of looting a boss, finding Shaman gear, and there's none in your party now don't we?

In this series, we'll be taking a look at the Arena, drafting our cards, and playing through all our games with one hero from beginning to end!  In this first installment, we'll be selecting from three heroes and drafting our set.  Did we make the right choices?  Let us know, and come with us, as we venture into... the Arena!

Critical Plays - Hearthstone: Mage vs Priest

World of Warcraft is practically known by anyone who is a gamer; whether they consider themselves video gamers or not!  It's no surprise that Blizzard, one of the most successful video game companies in the world, has decided to take their already immensely popular universe, and turn it into an online card game... however, this isn't the WOW TCG if that's what you're expecting!

Hearthstone is similar to WOW TCG, it has attack, health, mana, creatures to play (mrglglglglglglgle goes the Murloc), and heroes to attack.  And, like its closely related sibling, Hearthstone sees two mages battling it out to lower their opponent's life to 0 first.  Hearthstone just happens to do all that in a more streamlined, faster, somewhat lighter way.

Join us as Kraken Dan and I take Hearthstone for a spin, provide some introduction, and begin our journey in this free to play collectible card game in the World of Warcraft Universe!

Critical Preview - RARRR!!!

There's something very satisfying about playing a monster, building up power, and using it to destroy some unknowing cityscape.  Many games like Monsterpocalypse, King of Tokyo and others have provided new and unique ways to enjoy the Kaiju theme of giant sized dinosaurs and monsters wreaking havoc on townsfolk.

Today, we present you a new Kickstarter project from APE Games called RARRR! In RARRR you will not only be a monster doing all these dastardly destroying deeds, but you'll get the opportunity to draft your monster's powers, strategize on what type of attack will work best and choose which cities, from several worldwide, you'll get to bash up!

For a monster game, RARRR is surprisingly light, both in terms of complexity to pick up, and in actual portability!  While simple to pick up, the options and strategy are there, and thus far RARRR has proved to be a big punch in a small package!

Critical Review - Bruges

Bruges (Brugge, pending your location in the world) is a new game from Stefan Feld and Z-Man Games.  Both Feld and Z-Man have been on fire recently, with solid games (Castles of Burgundy from Feld, and even more diseases in Pandemic from Z-Man to name a few) and are riding a very solid high in the table top game world!

Combining a world renowned designer and a top of the notch publisher should equal easy success right?  In Bruges, Feld takes us on a journey in 15th century Belgium, where it's our job to influence and build our way to success, as the city of Bruges is about to become a bustling economic center in the European region!

We'll be building houses and canals, influencing everyone inhabiting the city from nobles to peasants, and trying to gain favor in the political ranks, all with the goal of having the most victory points at the end of the game!

Come with us as explore the city, its canals, and its people in Bruges!

Critical Play - Solforge

In an effort to bring you more of the digital world of Board Gaming, we're taking our first dive into a recorded Critical Play of Solforge!  Solforge, which is free to play, recently went live near Gen Con 2013, and is improving as we go, allowing for custom deck building now, and campaign and tournaments down the road.  iPhone and Android are also on the horizon for this popular kickstarter success!

Here we take one of our custom made decks called The Soul Thickett, based around the Nekrium and Uterra factions (which your critical feedback is appreciated on) and take on a match against the hard AI! Thinking ahead, if this is popular, we may even offer the opportunity to play critical fans and record them for all to see, so let us know your feedback!
