Critical Components - The Critical Game Room!

A few Critical Fans have asked us about our own game play space so we thought we'd take a second today and share with you, the Critical Game Room itself! This is where we play most of our games, play test prototypes and formulate our ideas for reviews, play throughs, and previews!

A lot of people that see it, love the shelving, and we can't argue; we love it too! This shelving is called "Expedit" from IKEA, and it's a very affordable and solid solution to stacking and storing all the fun cardboard in your life!

We hope you enjoy this short look around and we look forward to you comments and feedback!

If you are interested in joining us, we're going to pick one lucky random winner two weeks prior to the filming.  We will be filming on Monday, February 17th at 1PM CST.  If you want to enter to win a spot, it's simple, comment below by saying "I want to play!" and you'll be entered.

Critical Review - Steampark

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

Iello is probably best known for their smash hit, King of Tokyo!  It's on its third expansion, it's designer, Richard Garfield is known and loved the world over, and the momentum that game has seems to never slow down!

You'd think with all that in their corner, some of the newer games may not be as exciting, losing some momentum, fun or creative possibly, right?  Wrong!  Today, we're looking at Steam Park, a hot Essen release from Iello last year!  Steam Park is unique in many ways, but most noticeably is it’s art, by Marie Cardouat.  Her images bring about a lively, slightly morbid, yet entertaining world

With stylish gameplay and devilish tactics, it’s up to you to run you own "theme park" in a world unlike any other!  Beware though, building isn't always productive or profitable, as you'll be buried under the dirt from your construction, the dirt from your "visitors" and dirt from just being plain old slow at hand!  Grab your shovels, you're going to need them, and let's jump into the world of Steam Park!

Critical Look at 2013

2013 seemed to start in a way that was very un-exciting.  It looked like the year of the expansions, and in some ways it was, but towards mid year, it became apparent, this year was going to be like none other!

New mechanics, new themes, new ideas were being explored, literally, everywhere!  2013 brought us a lot of creativity from both big name publishers and designers and new blood in the industry as well!  Some of our favoritres got bigger, and some of our wishes came true!

Join me as I look back at 2013, and highlight 3 games in 3 categories, that I feel were top of the mark!  From Kickstarter, to pocket size fun, to big box enjoyment, there is something for everyone in our Critical Look at 2013!

Critical Strike - Empires of Zidal, Scripts and Scribes: The Dice Game, and Jungle Ascent

In our first Critical Strike of 2014, we're going to be taking a look at three very different games, all providing fun in their own ways!

We've got Deckbuilding in a fantasy world where it's our job to train workers, build buildings, and gain signets, in Empires of Zidal from Dog Breath Games.  Then, we've got dice galore, in a holy way, where we'll delve into the abbey, and attempt to improve all the works therein with Scripts and Scribes: The Dice Game from Dr. Finn Games. Finally, we'll do our best to avoid obstacles, while setting traps for our opponents, and reach the top of the mountain in Jungle Ascent, from 5th Street Games!

Critical Review - Voluspa and Voluspa: Order of the Gods

Stronghold games is on fire lately, with several great games, most recently bringing out Space Cadets Dice Duel!  This time out, we're taking a spin on a different world though... one with Gods, tricksters, Trolls, and the Mighty God of Thunder, Thor, in Voluspa!

Voluspa. the base game (which now includes the Saga of Edda expansion in the base set) and Voluspa: Order of the Gods, the latest expansion, are tile laying games based in Norse mythology where you'll vie to play the tile with the highest value in a row or column, and score points to defeat your opponents!

Come with us as we battle Frost Giants, Sea Serpents and deadly monsters with Odin, Thor, and other Norse Gods!

Critical Review - Krosmaster Arena

Krosmaster Arena may be the cutest thing to ever go through Kickstarter in terms of board games.  It's deceptive, very, very deceptive.  I went into this review thinking, well, it's probably a shallow game with really good looking minis, so everyone's backing it and it'll just be "meh".  Boy was I wrong!  I love it when a game surprised you like this one did to me!

Not only does Krosmaster scratch several itches, it does it in a way that superbly melds strategy and tactics in a flexible system that can be fun for you, your friends, and your family!  Come with us as we jump into this world of goballs, archers, reanimated dead, and more to see how to become the master of the Arena!

Critical Preview - Scribe's Arena

Every once in a while we get surprised by a game, and happily so!  I'm thrilled to be bringing you a Critical Preview of just such a game today!  I was introduced to Scribe's Arena at BoardGameGeekCon this year by the designer himself, Jason Chan, and was so happy I took the time to meet him and play his game!

Taking a core foundation from a game we all know and love, Scribe's Arena uses a hangman type word guessing engine, but powers it through magical spells, Gods, mystical powers and will see you fighting it out on great magical arenas!

If you like word games, this will be right up your alley.  It's fast, fun, easy to learn, and something that keeps you wanting to play it more and more; both to enjoy it, but also to outwit your opponent!

Critical Preview - Chaosmos

If you like deceit, cunning, and treachery, boy do we have a preview for you today!  Chaosmos, the newest Kickstarter from Mirror Box Games, is all that, wrapped up in a collapsing space race, that will leave you wanting more every time you play it.

The concept is simple; in an ever collapsing universe, be the one alien race to find, safeguard, and end the game in possession of the precious "Ovoid" artifact card.  You'll have to use exploration, cunning, thievery, combat, and about every negotiation skill you can think of to do it, but no one said safeguarding your races' future would be easy, did they?

If you like games like werewolf, where you only have "so much" information and it's up to you to piece together the truth, then we suggest you check out Chaosmos!
