Critical Play - Nations the Dice Game on Tabletopia!

Tabletopia is a very slick and intuitive interface that acts as a tabletop simulation program and boy is it fun! Today, I'm joined by my good friend and fellow board game designer, slash personality, slash "best person to play Sheriff of Nottingham with", Chris Leder and we are sitting around the "virtual table" to bring you a session of Nations the Dice Game on Tabletopia.

Tabletopia is something that I feel has the opportunity to revolutionize certain aspects of our industry and hobby.  From private testing, to promoting kickstarter games vs a print and play to just letting players play more games, it has it all!  So, sit back, relax, and get ready for some world conquering as we show you Nations the Dice Game on Tabletopia!

Solo Play of Firefly Shiny Dice

Firefly: Shiny Dice is not your "run of the mill" press your luck dice game. When I was designing this game, it came from a simple comment my son, NinjaZacj said while playing another press your luck dice game... "We should make this harder."

So we did.

The goal with FSD, even before it was what it is today, was to make a dice game that was both challenging and forced you to make decisions that were tough, on turn 1.  We didn't want it to be a game where you just rolled and instinctively "knew" what to do as there was one best thing to do each turn.

Side Meier, one of the men who shaped my gaming mind while growing up, once said, "A good game is a series of interesting choices."  That was an underlying theme when making FSD... so today, we decided to show you how it works by running through a full solo game of three turns.

Fire up the thrusters, it's time to get Shiny!

Critcal Play - Firefly: Shiny Dice

"Well... here I am..."

Those were the last words spoken on the Firefly TV show from Fox, and they are very fitting given my personal experiences right now.  As most of you may know, Firefly Shiny Dice is on store shelves now, from Upper Deck Entertainment.  I designed this game with the help of my son Zach, who came up with the original concept and idea of the game.

It's been a rollercoaster time putting it together, seeing it come to fruition in UDE's hands, and now, see people actually playing what we worked so hard on.  This is not your "daddy's" dice game though so I wanted to take some time and share some footage of what to expect when you jump into the cargo hold of Serenity and see what's our there in the 'verse...

In addition, I'd like to thank everyone how has sent me notes and messages supporting me, Zach, and the game.  We totally know this game isn't for everyone, but those it is for, we hope you are enjoying it as much as it sounds as you are.  From us to you, thank you very much!

Critical Plays - At the Emerald Tavern!

Friendly Local Game Stores are a staple of the board game industry, and without many of them, we'd never get to see or try our favorite games.  These are small businesses, run by entrepreneurs, who all share a love of the hobby we love so much!

In my area, Austin, Texas, we have several great stores, with awesome owners. Recently, I took my Go Pro Hero out to one, the Emerald Tavern Games and Cafe where some members of my gaming group sat down to play several fun games. Aside from some shaky camera work, which may or may not be due to the excellent fares the Tavern offers, we hope, from our group to yours, you enjoy this one.

Critical Plays - Bantering with Pair of Dice Paradise!

I love playing games, of all kinds, physical, digital, mental, you name it, I like it. It's even better when you can do these things with someone you like, and consider a friend.

Recently I was joined for an evening of Star Realms and Hearthstone by my friend Chaz Marler, also known online as "Adaygrit" from Pair of Dice Paradise.  As good friends do, we ended up bantering, and figured, why not record it?

So, without further ado, I give you the meanderings of two board game aficionados, who just really like sitting down for a good game every now and then! Enjoy!

Critical Plays - Star Realms for the PC

Star Realms was a very successful Kickstarter, and rightly so.  Rob Daugherty, the designer, and owner of White Wizard, has history with Ascension, so deck building is right up his alley.  Spice it up with "Authority", or life essentially, and some amazing science fiction races and art, and you get a winner!

Now, Star Realms, has been released for Mac, PC, and Android, with iOS pending like a hurricane off the south eastern coast of the US in April... and it's pretty slick!  We took it for a spin on the PC and recorded a fun game against the AI for your enjoyment!

Critical Plays - The Resistance

Every once in a while, an idea gets tossed around that's so wild, so nutty, so crazy, and insane, that it just MUST be done!  Tiffany (The ONE TAR) and Rhiannon from Spooning Meeples have come up with such an idea, and with that, I humbly present to you, your evening plans this Thursday, the 10th!

This Thursday, myself, Tiffany, Rhiannon, and a host of others will be playing the Resistance, LIVE!  Yes, LIVE!

Allegedly, there was a "dry run" that has been "lost" in the archives where two tremendously handsome and dashing men won as spies recently, but you will have to tune in yourself to see the outcome the actual play through!  Get ready to lie, cheat, backstab and be devious with us online this Thursday!  See you there!

To join us, go here Thursday evening, the 10th at... UPDATE: Time has changed to 8:30 CST!

If you're curious who else may be spies, get ready as we'll be joined by Rodney Smith (Watch it Played), Glen and Cheryl (Couple v.s Cardboard), Ryan Metzler (The Dice Tower), Joel Eddy (Drive Thru Reviews), Antony Racano (The Cardboard Jungle), Hunter Selburne (Weapons Grade Table Top), Chaz Marler (Pair of Dice Paradise), and Rick Perez (Let's Level Up)!

Critical Plays - Roll For It!

I met Chris Leder, the designer of Roll For It, through the GameCrafter.com.  He had a game, City of Gears, which struck us as a "hidden gem". After reviewing City fo Gears, we then kept in touch, and he informed us of this new "party" game he was working on, that honestly, sounded to simple to be good.  I love being wrong!

Roll For It, from Calliope Games, is a tremendously simple, easy to learn, yet challenging game for literally, anyone. To prove this, we sat down at SXSW's gaming festival in Austin Texas, with everyone from Boyan Radakoich (producer of Table Top) to new comers to the world of board gaming and played Roll For It!

This was shot on a GoPro Hero3+ in a "first person" point of view, so not only do you get to see the fun of Roll For It, but you get to see what it's like being "that person" at "that table"!

Also, check out your local stores on International Table Top Day, April 5th, as there is an exclusive Roll For It Express that may be available in your area!

Critical Plays - Rampage

Continuing on with our series of Critical Plays, we have a town full of unsuspecting meeples ready to be devoured, destroyed, thrown around like, well, like meeples, an in general have chaos thrust upon them by some wooden Kaiju!  I'm talking of course, about Rampage!

Rampage is possibly one of the most fun games Antoine Bauza has designed, as it's simple to teach, easy to enjoy for all ages, and something adults can laugh at and have fun with, or, sit down with their family for a great evening!  Each player receives a wooden monster, starts on a corner of a board, and literally "goes to town" moving, destroying, and devouring everything in its path!

Come with us as Kraken Dan and I are joined by Rebekah and Eric from Wonko's Toys and Games as we enter this wooden devastation zone together for a 4 player game of Rampage!

Critical Plays - Castellan

Like most gamers, I pine for the days of Car Wars.  I was a child of the 80s and I loved, literally loved, Car Wars.  Steve Jackson has yet to fulfill my fantasy of relaunching my beloved motorcycle mayhem and car conundrum role playing, but I can forgive him... for the time...

Recently, SJG brought out Castellan, an area control game that is light (literally), easy to learn, and fun for the whole family!  So tonight, NinjaZach and I decided to play around with our new camera and film a game in stop motion for an impromptu Critical Play!

If you'd like to learn more about Castellan, check out their BGG page here!

Critical Plays - Compounded

Last year, Darrel Louder (of Unpub.net fame) brought us a set collection game dripping with theme, vibrant with color, and took us all back to our days of Chemistry class!  With the help of Dice Hate Me Games, Darrell gave the world Compounded: Better Gaming Through Chemistry, a science themed game of set collection and slight territory control that appeals to both straight A science nerds and the barely passing flunkies in the lab!

This time out, myself, Kraken Dan, and Eric Dow, the owner of Wonko's Toys and Games in Austin Texas, sit down for a 3 player game of this elemental beauty in the hopes of having fun, and sharing with you, one of our favorite kickstarter successes!  Grab your goggles, grab your Bunsen burners, and let's jump into the world of Compounded!

Critical Plays - Hearthstone Drafting

I have enjoyed Hearthstone for quite some time now and look forward to the game coming out of Beta soon.  It's nearly 100% polished and provides a quick fix to a TCG/CCG player as well as some very strategic game moments that satisfy almost everyone I know who has played it.

Today I decided to film an Arena run, where we draft a 30 card random deck, after choosing one of three heroes, and then you enter into battles against random online opponents in the hope of gaining riches and spoils.

While I can't guarantee riches and spoils, I can provide you insight into my latest Arena run... stay tuned, as we update more games, we'll post them here! Don't forget to tell us what you think of our choices and (potentially really bad) plays!

Critical Plays - Hearthstone - Arena Rogue Run!

We are taking Valeera on an Arena Run! If you haven't see our draft, check this out, but if you have, or you are done checking it out, then let's get ready to rumble!

Hearthstone Arena is one of the more fun aspects of the game, where you pick a random hero from a choice of three, then draft a 30 card deck and duke it out with online opponents.  The longer you last, the better your loot!  Packs, gold, crafting dust and more await the victors!

Check back often, as over the next few days we'll be posting all our games from this Arena run until we collect 3 losses!  You'll be able to see our wins, our defeats, and our loot at the end!  And of course, leave your comments below, or on our YouTube channel (or both) and let us know your thoughts!

Critical Plays - Hearthstone Arena Drafting

One of my favorite things about CCG/TCG type games is drafting.  I always felt it level set the playing field, allowing you to compete against other players where you weren't in a "pay to win" situation.

In Hearhtstone, drafting is a bit different than what a seasoned CCG/TCG player may think about, but it's fundamentally sound and a lot of fun!  You are presented with three random heroes to choose from and then each "turn" you must selet from 3 available card.

A nice thing about the digital piece of this game is that it can only offer you cards you use, so there's no fear of choosing a Paladin class and only seeing Shaman cards!  We all know the pain of looting a boss, finding Shaman gear, and there's none in your party now don't we?

In this series, we'll be taking a look at the Arena, drafting our cards, and playing through all our games with one hero from beginning to end!  In this first installment, we'll be selecting from three heroes and drafting our set.  Did we make the right choices?  Let us know, and come with us, as we venture into... the Arena!

Critical Plays - Hearthstone: Mage vs Priest

World of Warcraft is practically known by anyone who is a gamer; whether they consider themselves video gamers or not!  It's no surprise that Blizzard, one of the most successful video game companies in the world, has decided to take their already immensely popular universe, and turn it into an online card game... however, this isn't the WOW TCG if that's what you're expecting!

Hearthstone is similar to WOW TCG, it has attack, health, mana, creatures to play (mrglglglglglglgle goes the Murloc), and heroes to attack.  And, like its closely related sibling, Hearthstone sees two mages battling it out to lower their opponent's life to 0 first.  Hearthstone just happens to do all that in a more streamlined, faster, somewhat lighter way.

Join us as Kraken Dan and I take Hearthstone for a spin, provide some introduction, and begin our journey in this free to play collectible card game in the World of Warcraft Universe!

Critical Plays - Solforge (Tutorial/Overview)

Last week, during our discussions around the Critical Play we shared for Solforge, we received several requests to give an overview of the game, or a short tutorial.  Well, we do our best to listen and provide when our Critical Community asks, so without further ado, I give thee that very thing!

This time out we have a short overview of the deck builder, the factions, what Solforge is and where it game from, as well as some game play footage, card explanation and bit of this and that in between!  Let us know your thoughts... we're also planning a contest here very soon, where you may be able to be featured playing Solforge on Crits Happen!  Stay tuned!

Critical Play - Solforge

In an effort to bring you more of the digital world of Board Gaming, we're taking our first dive into a recorded Critical Play of Solforge!  Solforge, which is free to play, recently went live near Gen Con 2013, and is improving as we go, allowing for custom deck building now, and campaign and tournaments down the road.  iPhone and Android are also on the horizon for this popular kickstarter success!

Here we take one of our custom made decks called The Soul Thickett, based around the Nekrium and Uterra factions (which your critical feedback is appreciated on) and take on a match against the hard AI! Thinking ahead, if this is popular, we may even offer the opportunity to play critical fans and record them for all to see, so let us know your feedback!

Critical Plays - Pathfinder Adventure Card Game - The Finale

In which we slay a dragon... or not!

If you have come this far, I thank you.  If you have not, then I suggest checking out part one of our Critical Play, which was actually inside our Critical Review.  Then, head over here to see part two and gaze in amazement at my tremendous dice rolling skills!

Don't become bewildered too quickly though, as the epic rolls may just continue in this, our final installment of Sellah's solo scenario, taking on Black Fang's Dungeon!  Can our heroic Paladin lay waste to the terror of the Temple?  Or, will she succumb to falure and demise at the hands of the beast?

Critical Plays - Pathfinder Adventure Card Game

In our last Critical Review for the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, we attempted a Solo run, using Seelah the Paladin, against the Black Fang's Dungeon Scenario.  We left off after having closed the Temple and having encountered Black Fang himself twice, and quite honestly, being beaten around a bit by him!

Now, part 2 is online for your enjoyment, and as a precursor, this is not the ending!  Part 3 will be online soon, but for now, let's venture back to Black Fang's dungeon and see if we can succeed, or succumb to the perils of the Perilous Coast.

Critical Plays - Gravwell

Every once in a while a game comes along that is so simple, and so straight forward, you scratch your head and think, "why didn't I think of this?".  Then you realize you're laughing so hard from the resulting actions players take in the game to care and you just enjoy the ride for what it is!

Gravwell, from Cryptozoic entertainment, does just that.  It's a simple game to learn and to teach, but it will take you on a wild, fun filled, treacherous ride!  And a ride you soon won't forget!  We say it a lot in this video, but we'll say it one more time, this is the gem of Gen Con 2013.  It's beautiful, it's simple, it's fun, and it's original.  So why should we say anything else... let's play some Gravwell!

Critical Plays - Dungeon Roll

Gen Con may be over, but the spirit still lives on in our hearts... and our dungeons!  One of the highlights of my week was being able to meet Michael Mindes, Owner of Tasty Minstrel Games, in person for the first time.  If you have never met Michael, I highly suggest to take advantage of the opportunity if it presents itself.  He is very connected with his community and is a very approachable and friendly guy!  If you aren't familiar with his game line, I 2X highly recommend to check out Tasty Minstrel's line of awesomeness!

As most of you know though, Dungeon Roll was an extremely wild success on Kickstarter recently.  It brought thousands of backers together for a dungeon delving, press your luck dice game, in a way none other had done before.  We recently received our kickstarter copy and decided to dust off the recording devices for a long awaited new Critical Play, and start diving deep into our own dungeon.  Because you know, that's how we roll. (Insert the "boo-hiss" noises here)

Critical Plays - The Lord of the Rings Deck Building Game

Last week we showed you the DC Deck Building game, built on the Cerberus Engine from Cryptozoic.  This week, we wanted to contrast it with the Lord of the Rings Deck Building game, also based on the Cerberus Engine.

The LOTR game received a Crit from us during it's Critical Review while the DC Deck Building Game only received a Hit.  Were we spot on?  Is there still debate to be made in either direction?  Ultimately, how do the two games stack up against each other, both in terms of similarities and differences?

Thanks to our friends on Facebook and Twitter, we asked who you wanted to see played, and Aragorn and Gandalf were the winners.  Come with us as we try to simply walk into a deck building game and play, the Lord of the Rings the Deck Building Game.

Critical Plays - The DC Deck Building Game

The recent Critical Review of the DC Deck Building Game from Cryptozoic spawned some good and healthy discussions!  Some people thought I was too light on it and others thought I was too harsh on it. I've received several requests to do a Critical Play and I hope that this session helps bring to light some of the things discussed, and possibly, brings up new items to chat about.

In this video, my wife and I sat down to play a two player game, with me being The Flash and her being Wonder Woman (of course), to take on Ra's Al Ghul and 7 other dastardly Super Villains inside the DC Universe!  Additionally, we didn't do a "Fan's vote" on this review as we weren't doing them at the time, so we added a poll at the bottom of this post to cast your vote on if you think this is a Crit, Hit or Miss!

Critical Plays - Mage Wars

Many have asked for it and I'm happy to say all parts are available now! Myself and Kraken Dan, whom you may remember from our Critical Play of Blood Bowl: Team Manager, sit down and walk through Mage Wars!

Now, as a precursor, I'd like to say that if you're planning on watching these videos for strategy sessions, you may want to look elsewhere.  This is two average gamers, enjoying a great game, and filming it to show you more than you'd see normally.  That said, we welcome healthy discussion on moves, cards, what and when to play, etc., knowing that what and how you'll see us play in these videos is very casually.

I hope you enjoy these! Check back often, as we'll be adding the additional parts below as they are available!

Critical Plays - Marvel Legendary

I walked away from Gen Con 2012 impressed by several games.  More importantly, I was impressed by Jason Brenner, the gentleman at UDE behind Marvel Legendary!  Legendary is UDE's take on Deck Building using the Marvel Comics universe.  Truth be told, UDE has not been the most consistent in terms of utilizing Marvel's license in ways to make fans happy, let alone, have handled other games the way the fans would prefer.  I was severly impressed by Jason's transparency when talking with him about this.

We chatted for several minutes before my demo of Legendary, and what I heard was someone who is passionate about gaming, passionate about bringing an entertaining and captivating experience through the game, and one who understood the lay of the land.

All that said, does Marvel Legendary hold up in an environment where Cryptozoic is coming out with the DC Deck Building game?  Time will tell... until later, when we bring you a Critical Review, we have the below video for you to enjoy, which is our Critical Play of Marvel Legendary.  Grab your Hammer, your Shield, your Arc Reactor, and get Angry... it's Clobberin' Time!

Critical Plays - Blood Bowl Team Manager

Blood Bowl is one of the most fun andd popular minature games you can play.  However, one would not think that a highly successful minis game can easily be turned into an equally fun and exciting card game?  That said, last year, Fantasy Flight Games attempted this, and in our opinion, pulled it off quite well!

Blood Bowl Team Manager The Card Game, puts you in control of your own team roster from one of several races in the warhammer universe.  There are humans, dwarves, orcs, trolls, skaven and more! You get to decide where your players impact the game, who tackles who, and who will become the season champion with the most fans!

Last year we did a Critical Review of the game and gave it an 8.5 (Crit) at the time.  Through the request of a fan, we're back to provide you a Critical Play through of the game, highlighting the first round of the game between the Dwarves and the Skaven.  Enjoy!

Critical Plays - Android: Infiltration

After an overwhelming 600+ views of our Android: Infiltration Critical Review, I thought it was about time to put something together that showed the gameplay in more detail!  For this set up, we chose 4 random players and played using the "Specialists" variant rule, where each character has their own specific 2 starting item cards, along with 2 random cards.

Those of you who read or watched the Critical Review would remember that I mentioned there are no base differences in the character cards so choosing who to play didn't have much affect on the game.  Playing with the "Specialists" variant adds that element to the game and is one I find veyr satisfying and enjoying to play with.

Let us know if you like this type of walkthrough, if you'd like to see more, and if so, which games.  In the meantime, it's time to kick in the door of Cyber Solutions and start extracting some Data Files!
