Update on Critical Previews

As many of you may have noticed, I have not done a Critical Preview in quite some time.  As this year comes to a close, I've been working on some changes for our site and video plans and I wanted to discuss them with you here today.

Critical Previews were created in March of 2013 with our first preview for Shift.  The idea of the Critical Previews was two fold; Make more videos/content and focus on games that interested me.  At the outset, this was easily managed and while I look back at some of them with fondness, I can easily see the pathway that led us to where we are today; making the announcement that I will no longer be doing Critical Previews.

Critical Preview - Strife: Legacy of the Eternals

Vision 3 Games, the makers of Incredibrawl, are back on Kickstarter with, transparently, one of the best games I've played in a while during a Critical Preview; Strife: Legacy of the Eternals.

Strife is a game about open information, where you and your opponent are battling over magical lands, but only the person who chooses wisely will prevail, using both their battle champion and legacy champion's abilities best!

In Strife, you and your opponent have access to the same type of cards, but it'll be up to you to both anticipate your opponent's choices, as well as plan for the future, as once you use a champion to battle, they will become your legacy champion, adding support to your next choice!

Portable but packed with excitement, Strife is a game I would highly recommend to check out on Kickstarter, today!

Critical Preview - Scrapyard Empire

If you know me, Steampunk is something I love, and feel hasn't been done justice by the board gaming community, in general.  There are many good Steampunk Games, with one of my favorites still being City of Gears by Chris Leder, but it's hard to find a good one in the sea of "Great games" that are out there...

With that, I'm happy to share with you one that definitely is up to snuff, or as an ol' fly boy might say, "One that lifts the ol' dirigible!"  Scrapyard Empire from Galliant Games is a set collection racing card game where you are competing to create amazing inventions before your opponents do, from what else, mere scrap!  Grab your petrol, turn the crank, and fire up the jet propulsion systems, it's time to take off with Scrapyard Empire!

Critical Preview - Hollywood

Last year, we shared a review on World of Tanks, from Hobby World.  It was an exciting and unique deck building game that we still are enjoying getting to the table. Today, Hobby World is enjoying success with a new type of card game, Hollywood!

Hollywood will put you in the shoes of a Hollywood exec, with the goal of hiring the right director, cast and crew to make the best, and of course, the most profitable, movie, or movies, of the year!  You will use drafting and set collection mechanics along with bidding during two different stages, to ensure you acquire the best cards possible to make the best movies!

Let's settle into the director's chair, warm up the cushions of the casting couch, and go make the most profitable and popular movie of the year, on our way to winning, in Hollywood!

Critical Preview - Evolution

I used to have a boss who would use the phrase, "Evolve or die!" all the time. He lived by it, or rather, he evolved by it.  It is an interesting concept to delve into... are we as humans evolving right now?  Do we have what it takes to secure our species existence by evolving the right traits?

Thankfully, along comes North Star Games to let us test this theory, in a much more relaxed environment, your gaming table, with Evolution!  Evolution is a new strategy game from North Star Games, who, by all rights, may be a surprise publisher for this, given their other lines of games.  Fear not though dear reader, as this game packs a punch, with horns, camo, climbing and sorts of tricks!

Evolution is a n easy to learn, hard to master, ever changing game that will keep you on your toes to adjust every turn.  Do you defend against predators around every corner, or evolve into one yourself?  Do you balance your land and fill it with multiple species or do you build one dominant race that rules them all?  The choices are yours... in Evolution!

Critical Preview - Tuscany

Legacy style game play is something I love! I think it adds a great element of growth for all players to enjoy with a game and it something most everyone can get behind in some form or fashion.  If you're unfamiliar with this style, it essentially sees you play a game, then, pending who wins, unlocking new mechanics or modules to add to the rules, changing the experience, and more importantly, making it your own!

Viticulture was Stonemaier Games' hit success of a worker placement game, which saw players take on the role of a vineyard owner, trying to fulfill wine orders through the production of different types of wine.  Now, what was an already solid worker placement game, gets the Legacy style make over, as Tuscany: Expand the World of Viticulture is on Kickstarter!

Critical Preview - Lineage

Most prototypes we get are pretty rough, and that's to be expected.  The rules are sometimes challenging, the pieces are sometimes simple, but we always find a way to muscle through things.  Then, every once in a while, someone brings us something that is extremely well planned, and just downright beautiful.

Lineage, the Martial Arts Strategy Game is just that.  If someone told me the game copy I had was a prototype, I'd pretty much not believe them, this version is that good.

Lineage is an asymmetrical board game where players play as either the Emperor and General or a pair of Master and Student, vying for different win conditions, while impacting gameplay with every move.  It's deeply rooted in Chinese philosophy and culture, and is much more than meets the eye.

Lineage is currently on Kickstarter, so after viewing our preview, head over to their project page to check it out!

Critical Preview - Epic Resort

Every once in a while, something comes along that catches you by surprise.  Epic Resort is just that kind of game.  The theme alone turned us on the moment we heard it; you’re a resort owner, building the best attractions and staffing them with workers, where your goal is to encourage heroes and tourists to come to your resort, to relax and recuperate from their dungeon delving adventures.

All that, and it has great art and was made by Floodgate games, the makers of Legacy: Gears of Time and Legacy: Forbidden Machines! Seriously!? I'm in....

Epic resort is a tongue in cheek game that has a lot to offer to gamers. There's the comedy of Paladins relaxing on the beach and the thrill of the Slaughter Coaster!  There's deck building, or more deck evolution, and resource management.  There's timing decisions, labor decisions, and a host of actions that will keep you tuned on every player's turn.

So what are you waiting for? Go get your best thong on and hit the beach in Epic Resort!

Critical Preview - Pirate Den

Most people that are into designer board games know the name Boyan Radakovich as someone who brings us the world renowned Table Top, hosted by Wil Wheaton.  Aside from bringing us the record setting streaks of "losing at one's own place" on the Geek and Sundry channel, Bo also has been a successful game designer and developer with The Gamesmith!

Now, Gamesmith is sailing the high seas and bringing us Pirate Den, a family style bluffing game for 3 to 5 daring pirates!  There's subterfuge, attacks, and plundering to be found in every round, and only the bravest and wiliest pirate will secure victory from their buried treasure and bountiful gems!

Come with us as we set forth on an adventure at SXSW's Game Expo to learn about Pirate Den, steal some booty, and see what it's like to play with the man behind the camera himself, Boyan!

Critical Preview - Primary

Today we're happy to bring you a Critical Preview for a rather unique and colorful game, Primary from Nosidam games.  Primary just launched on Kickstarter and looks to take some simple mechanics and provide an impact around the table that'll always be different and strategic!

At its core, Primary is a card game about staying "in the game", or "alive" longer than all the other players.  Think of it like "last man standing".  To stay alive, you have to be able to play a card, or remove a token from one or more you have in play.  Sounds simple right?

Whether you are looking for a new, slightly abstract game, or love card games with combos galore, Primary may be right up your alley!

Critical Preview - Heroes Wanted

I loved playing with two toys when I was a kid; Little Van Goes and the Mighty Men and Monster Maker!  I would spend hours making new creations, putting things together, taking them apart, and recreating all afternoon.  So, you can imagine my joy when I learned about the main mechanic of character creation in Heroes Wanted, from Action Phase Games; Mix and match your cards to make a super hero!  Color me in!

Travis Chance and Nick Little have put together a really fun adventure game, that is lighthearted but strategic, and even offers elements for solo and party play!  It's time to immerse yourself inside Zeta City, where everyone wants to be a hero, but only the mightiest (or beard-iest?!) will survive!

Critical Preview - Mob Town

5th Street Games is known for some seriously fun games with comical themes, and their latest introduction to Kickstarter, Mob Town, grounds itself in both those areas.  Based on area control with resource management and objective based rewards, Mob Town is sure to please strategic gamers, family gamers, and those in between.

Mob Town isn't even “a” town, rather, it is several, as each round in the game is going to see you building a new city out of a clever mechanic that ensures your towns are always different.  From there, it's up to you, or your opponents, to use the rival gangs to secure locations for themselves, scoring the most victory points.

It’s every Snake, Shark, Weasel, Fox, and Rat for himself, or herself, in this world!  Do you have what it takes to score the most points before the Law comes crashing down on you?

Critical Preview - Scribe's Arena

Every once in a while we get surprised by a game, and happily so!  I'm thrilled to be bringing you a Critical Preview of just such a game today!  I was introduced to Scribe's Arena at BoardGameGeekCon this year by the designer himself, Jason Chan, and was so happy I took the time to meet him and play his game!

Taking a core foundation from a game we all know and love, Scribe's Arena uses a hangman type word guessing engine, but powers it through magical spells, Gods, mystical powers and will see you fighting it out on great magical arenas!

If you like word games, this will be right up your alley.  It's fast, fun, easy to learn, and something that keeps you wanting to play it more and more; both to enjoy it, but also to outwit your opponent!

Critical Preview - Chaosmos

If you like deceit, cunning, and treachery, boy do we have a preview for you today!  Chaosmos, the newest Kickstarter from Mirror Box Games, is all that, wrapped up in a collapsing space race, that will leave you wanting more every time you play it.

The concept is simple; in an ever collapsing universe, be the one alien race to find, safeguard, and end the game in possession of the precious "Ovoid" artifact card.  You'll have to use exploration, cunning, thievery, combat, and about every negotiation skill you can think of to do it, but no one said safeguarding your races' future would be easy, did they?

If you like games like werewolf, where you only have "so much" information and it's up to you to piece together the truth, then we suggest you check out Chaosmos!

Critical Preview - WWII the Card Game

Axis vs. Allies is one of my all-time favorite war games.  Without trying to trivialize war and the tragedy that happens all around it, military struggles make for great games!  Large scale or small scale, leading troops into battle and succeeding at a militaristic strategy is a wonderful feeling.

Today, a good friend of ours, Fanfare Games, has brought us a new Kickstarter called WWII - The Card Game for those of us into these types of things, but looking for a slightly new take on the Axis and Ally struggles. WWII - the Card Game pits 2 players in a deeply strategic battle that will see you managing deck construction, area control, hand, and resource management, with the goal of course, to win the war!

If this is your type of thing, check them out on Kickstarter at the links below!

Critical Preview - Privateer

This Critical Preview is brought to you by the letter "R"... say it with me... "Arrrgh!"

Bad puns aside, if I could go to any time in the world and be anyone, being an infamous pirate, sailing the Caribbean seas and plundering merchant vessels sounds like a pretty fun adventure!  Privateer, a recently re-launched kickstarter, is out to provide you just that swashbuckling, cargo filling, port plundering good time!

We had the opportunity to put this high seas adventure through its paces and have thoroughly enjoyed it!  We're looking forward to seeing the final product, but in the meantime, enjoy our slightly longer than normal Critical Preview, where we show you a 3 player game of Privateer!  Shiver your timbers, strap on your boots and sword, and set sail with Mrs. Tox, Kraken Dan (so appropriately named here) and myself as we hire crew, trade goods, and attack some unsuspecting merchants in Privateer!

Critical Preview - Pixel Glory

At Gen Con 2013 I met a man named Frank Alberts, who introduced me to something called "An Auction Building Game".  I was immediately intrigued and curious as to what that mean.  I had an idea of course, but I'm here to tell you, this idea, although small, makes for one heck of a fun card game!

In Pixel Glory, you play the role of a fame-hungry wizard.  You, and your opponents, will be "training" in town, using an auction style mechanic to draft spell cards for your deck.  These spells will also provide you essence of a specific element, and ultimately, help you defeat the monsters terrorizing the town in the nearby dungeon.

Pixel Glory is a unique combination of mechanics and a lighthearted theme that come together to produce an engaging and fun experience around the table.  In addition, it's quick to teach, easy to learn, and always different each time you play. The 16 bit art? If you are a retro-lover like me, that's just an added bonus!

Critical Preview - Space Junk

"In the year 2047 thw world's atmosphere was filled with all manners of junk, and finally those in charge decided to do something about it.  Their solution was to begin production of Space Junk, a brand new reality TV show that followed a group of very carefully, random contestants as they cobbled together spaceships out of whatever junk they can find and did their best to clean up space."

It is with that auspicious beginning that Space Junk launches itself onto your table. Lamp Light Games' first endeavor on Kickstarter is a bit of racing, a bit of combat, a bit of custom ship building, and a lot of comedy as you'll be adding plungers, surf boards, dentures, and anything else floating in the atmosphere to help your ship make it "one more orbit" or attack for "one more hit"!

Is Space Junk as fun as it is funny?  Can the universe, or Earth at least, be cleaned up by you, or your opponents?  Strap onto your elephant rockets and let's find out!

Critical Preview - RARRR!!!

There's something very satisfying about playing a monster, building up power, and using it to destroy some unknowing cityscape.  Many games like Monsterpocalypse, King of Tokyo and others have provided new and unique ways to enjoy the Kaiju theme of giant sized dinosaurs and monsters wreaking havoc on townsfolk.

Today, we present you a new Kickstarter project from APE Games called RARRR! In RARRR you will not only be a monster doing all these dastardly destroying deeds, but you'll get the opportunity to draft your monster's powers, strategize on what type of attack will work best and choose which cities, from several worldwide, you'll get to bash up!

For a monster game, RARRR is surprisingly light, both in terms of complexity to pick up, and in actual portability!  While simple to pick up, the options and strategy are there, and thus far RARRR has proved to be a big punch in a small package!

Critical Preview - Pandemic iOS

No one does cooperative games quite like Matt Leacock!  Z-Man games' Pandemic took the board game world by storm (it was almost infectious!) a few years ago, and since Matt has designed many solid cooperative experiences, all tense, in a good way, and delivering a tremendous experience.

Today, Z-Man released Pandemic on iOS for the iPad.  We took our iPad 2 running iOS 7 and gave it a whirl and below is a bit of the tutorial and regular gameplay for you too look at.

If you're interested in the app, you can check it out on the iTunes store for $6.99 retail starting today!

Critical Preview - Keep the Crown

Abstract games can sometimes be challenged in the marketplace.  Sometimes their theme doesn't connect with masses, sometimes their replay value isn't there and other times, they just only hit a niche market.

Thankfully, Keep the Crown, our latest Critical Preview, bucks these issues! We were contacted by Jamal Green, the project owner (on Kickstarter right now) and it immediately looked interesting.  It looked like an app game too, but more on that in the video below!

If you like placement games (chips or tiles), light enough theme for adults and young gamers to enjoy, and a game that's always changing, always offering you new choices, and lets you rack up the points, Keep the Crown may be for you!

Critical Preview - Infamy

We play a lot of kickstarter beta/prototypes... a LOT!  Some of this is done in preparation for a Critical Preview and some is just good old fashioned "can you look at my game?" type stuff.  In either case, we love getting a chance to play new things, new ideas, and new mechanics.

Why am I tell you this?  Because Infamy, from Mercury Games and Travis R. Chance, is easily one of the three best kickstarter games I've played this year! I'm very happy to bring you a Critical Preview of a game that is almost about to end it's kickstarter program (so if you are interested, check it out fast!) but has a load of excitement and fun waiting for you!

Infamy combines bidding, worker placement, and resource management/mission completion mechanics into the well designed world of ARES-6, a martian mining colony.  Your role?  Be a freelancer criminal and take over one of the gangs on ARES-6, or, gain enough Infamy to rule on your own!

Critical Preview - Road Kill

I was, am, and always will be a huge Car Wars fan.  The concept of racing down a highway and spitting flamethrowers at enemies, spilling oil slicks behind me, and firing rockets at helicopters had me spend so much money in my youth on Car Wars and Spy Hunter it's amazing I didn't become a stunt car driver!

At Gen Con this year, I had the opportunity to meet two gentlemen who are rebooting their Kickstarter that is all about everything us vehicular combat specialists love; Road Kill - Ultimate Car Combat!  We took some live footage and had the chance to talk with Miles and Greg, who started, stopped, improved, and are back to wow you with everything the roads can handle!  If you are interested in their project after watching our video, check out the links below to see more!  Until then, set your rockets to heat seeking, and watch your rear view mirror!

Critical Preview - Smash Monster Rampage

5th Street games has a rather successful and entertaining looking kickstarter on their hands, with a 3D set up of Monster Mayhem and 'Copter Chaos, calls Smash Monster Rampage!  As you can imagine, this isn't a stroll through central park!

Smash Monster Rampage looks to capture all the fun of a gigantic monster thrashing through a well built, but seemingly fragile city, setting buildings on fire, gobbling up pedestrians, and driving the military to bring out the big guns!  In this case, the big guns are tanks and helicopters that will shoot at, and hopefully destroy, said big bad monster.

This is a solo or fully cooperative game that is being brought to you by the same company that produced Farmageddon and Jungle Ascent, both successfully funded on kickstarter.  If you'd like to learn more after watching our Critical Preview, head on over to their project page today and if you like it, you may be able to help them "smash" their goals!

Critical Preview - Byzantio

Every once in a while a game comes along on Kickstarter and surprises you.  It rekindles something lost, or it inspires you with something new, or, sometimes, it makes you just enjoy playing games again.  Byzantio has done all that with me and I'm happy to bring you a Critical Preview for it!

In Byzantio, the King of the Byzantine Empire has ascended to the heavens, but alas, there is no heir to the throne, so it's up to you, and up to 3 other players to take the "Pretender to the throne" from their house, and ensure victory, sovereignty and leadership for the future!

Byzantio has area control, deceit, strategy, tactics, timing, game driven events, and espionage all rolled into a small, but entertaining package that scratches several itches, and all well!  Whether you are a fan of risk style area control games, dominating the world or you enjoy deduction and espionage games, Byzantio will provide you many games filled with both, along with fun, and excitement.  You never know what move means something and what move is being played out to lead you down the wrong path, but all the while, you must use your skill and wit to determine not just how to enact your strategy, but what your opponent's is as well.

With that, dear future rule, I give you... Byzantio!

Incredibrawl is a fast paced, comical thrashing where you will be knights, warriors, zombies and unicorns (yes, unicorns!) fighting over arenas to score glory and beat your opponents in scraps and brawls!  The Agents is also a fast paced game, but this is built on espionage, cunning tactics, well timed strategy, and gameplay that will see every decision matter to you, and your opponent! Critical Components - Daft Concepts

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of meeting Chris from Daft Concepts (@battlejack).  With him he had some of the coolest looking dice I've seen in a while, which were laser cut and very stylish.  When he told me he was planning a kickstarter, I knew I had to share his work with you, the Critical Fans, if not for form and function, but for just the "cool" factor.

If after watching our video, you're interested in learning more about Daft Concepts, you can check them out online at their kickstarter or at their homepage for more information!  In the meantime, enjoy our video rolling and storing the dice we had a chance to play with and we hope they inspire you to potentially add some more stylish components to your games and gaming experiences!

MAGE Company News - The Amityville Project: Phobos

MAGE company has had some successful runs on kickstarter lately.  Be it Archon: Machination and Glory from Artipia Games, 12 Realms (a big success from last year), or Wrong Chemistry, the pattern of success is holding true for them and their projects.

Today I was contacted by MAGE Company about a new game that looks on the surface very interesting.  It is called The Amityville Project: Phobos.  Before I explain more, it's amazingly cool to know they have the files on BGG.com for print and play, so while their Kickstarter begins sometime in September, you have advance time to print, play, and check it out for yourself!

Critical Preview - Darkraven Fantasy Soundscapes

I've always been a fan of augmenting one's gaming experiences in any way that provides enjoyment (provided of course, no one gets hurt!  The last thing any band of merry men needs are "hammer marks" from a night of dice rolling!  I have seen some amazing aesthetic upgrades to games over the years that range from ancient money being used, to custom tokens, to fan made bits and chits that inspire, muse and deepen the overall experience, as well as one's love of the game!

Today I'm happy to share a new Kickstarter project called Darkraven Fantasy Soundscapes with you, to possibly augment any of a number of your gaming experiences.  Be it Role Playing or other table top games, Darkraven is poised to add a thematic experience to your gaming session that'll literally be music to your ears!  Darkraven, a pair of musicians who have been playing together for quite some time, have put together an ambitious, and already funded program, to help increase your experience at the table through the use of custom made audio tracks for many different environments.

Critical Preview - Give it to the King

Kickstarter, and other crowdfunding sites, bring out a lot of creativity in people and corporations looking to bring their dreams to life.  Our next project falls directly into those categories with a new company, the Flux Capacity, and designer Francois Valentyne's new game, Give it to the King!

Give it to the King is a unique racing game, where you and several other messengers are clamoring down a narrow hallway en route to the King's chambers with highly important messages that the King will pay handsomly for!  However, he'll only pay the first person that arrives, so you have to be quick on your feet, and fast with your actions.

The unique mechanic of Give it to the King is that the messages which you can be paid for also have in game affects that you can play, at the sacrifice of not being paid for messages you use in such a manner.  Are you willing to risk it all for strategic plans or rely on fate to get you to your leige!?

Critical Preview - Euphoria: Build a Better Dystopia

Last year we had the opportunity to do a review of a game called Viticulture: the Strategic Game of Winemaking from Stonemaier Games.  This was a Kickstarter game using traditional Worker Placement that we gave a hit to and had a good amount of fun playing.

Today, we have a preview for another Kickstarter project from Stonemaier Gamer, also a Worker Placement game, but one that's not so traditional, called Euphoria: Build a Better Dystopia. In Euphoria, dice will be used for workers, which in a game, you can only have a maximum of 4, but beware, this is a dystopian society, and if your workers gain too much knowledge about their environment, they will escape and flee!

Below is an unpaid preview for the game, based on a prototype copy provided to us by Stonemaier Games.  If you would like to see more about this project, you can check it out on Kickstarter or at Stonemaier Games main homepage.

Critical Preview - Shift

Lots have people have asked me to do previews for their kickstarter games. While I'd love to say yes to everyone, it's nearly an impossibility if not improbability, to do so.  I've stayed true to myself on this one; the games I highlight are games I am personally interested.  We have our Critical Horizons section on the right side bar of the site, and those are truly games I'm interested in.  No one pays to be on there.

That said, I've yet to delve into the world of "Previewing" a game, kickstarter or not.  Logistics, time, and honestly, personal interest have all played a factor in that, but that all said, I'm happy today, to bring you my first Critical Preview!  I recently saw Shift on Kickstarter and it caught my eye.  I admit it, I'm easily distracted by anime fighting games, and this one's art and style sounded intriguing, and I liked their video of discussing the challenge of creating a game that could fit on a business card.  I admire designers who give themselves a fun challenge.

That said, after contacting the gents at Laboratory, they kindly provided us two characters from the game!  With that, I give you a Critical Preview of Shift, the single card CCG, including a highlight of the rules and a short gameplay by myself and Kraken Dan.  I hope you enjoy it, and please, as always, send us your feedback!
